So here we are finally. Out in the city, on the edge of a crowded. sweaty dancefloor, lights blinding our eyes. So crowed, so blurry that the path to the centre of the party isn't going to be easy... But how did you get here? Out of the suburbs, out on your own, out to your friends, out to yourself. And what happens now?
I'm sure we all have memories of our initial forays into the big bad world that we'd prefer to airbrush out. The naivety, the over-eargerness, the foolish behaviour. Documenting this journey, brave as it may be provides a personal showcase of reaction and emotion as you delve into an unknown world. Perhaps to capture your emergence into a scene far, far away from your comfort zone, can be an intergral part of understanding it.
It still amazes me to see the contrast of images that come out of these surroundings. Flamboyant colours and intense light are tinged with dirt and darkness. Pictures of pick fluffy stockings fillers for sale are surrounded by pornographic photos of men, also for sale, that thrust themselves at you from the pages of lifestyle magazines. They are images that introduce you to your new world, and help explain it to you; they are shocking images that become blurred as you become all-too-quickly densensitised to them.
Immortalising these moments immediately makes them part of your past, and therefore part of the experiences that shape your part in a new world. The result is a combination of confusion of clarity. The blurred boundaries of acceptable sexual desire contrasts with the clarity that friends bring to understanding. The daunting darkness of Soho backstreets leads to the vibrant colour of nightlife in the city. And most importantly, the soft-focus of things still to be discovered reminding you that this is only the beginning...
